The subtitle of the book is "The History of British Puddings" and that's what it is--a very strange, but fascinating and detailed, history with the addition of some recipes. It's a Puddings book history, not academic, told through the retro stylings of the author.

A hybrid of genres that is a delight to read and very usable to cook (though I would /5(18). Around half the recipes in the book are for steamed puddings, but I bought a 2-pint metal steamer off the internet, and have found steaming to be very straightforward.

The rest are an eclectic mix of baked puddings, chilled desserts, things to do with fruit, and the like/5(87). On paper, Christmas Pudding had all the classics of a good Christmas read.

It was relatively short. It didnt have a complex plot, and it had the words Christmas Pudding in the title. There is something terribly British about a good period drama at Christmas and being set in late s the book seemed to tick all the boxes.
